The Most Common Things People Forget While Moving

If you’ve ever left something behind during a move, you know how frustrating it can be. Thankfully, if you’re familiar with the most common things that people forget while moving, you’ll be able to make sure that you never leave anything important behind.

Hidden Belongings

Have you ever hidden money away for a rainy day? Do you have your most valuable jewelry stored in a safe? We sometimes hide items in our apartment to protect them, but unfortunately, those hidden items are often forgotten when people get ready to move.

Try to think of anything you might have hidden. Check every hiding place that you’ve used over the years, even if you don’t think that you have anything stored there. Please don’t take any chances, and make sure you search your home for hidden items before leaving them behind.

Items In Storage

If you have storage containers tucked away in an attic, a back closet, or another location that you don’t look at very often, you may forget to pack those items up while moving to a new apartment. Take the time to find all the things you have in storage.

Go through your basement from top to bottom. Check your entire attic. Look in the back of the closet and under the stairs. If you have anything in storage, you’ll want to make sure you find those items before moving day. Since the things you have in storage are probably packed up already, you shouldn’t have to do any packing.

Outdoor Decor

Your outdoor living space can be a big asset. However, you might forget about the things you have outdoors when you’re getting ready to move. If you’ve hung up wind chimes, a flag, or other outdoor decorations, you’ll want to make sure you bring those items with you to your new place.

Outdoor decor is a wonderful way to enhance your home and make it feel like it’s your own. It can also improve your home’s curb appeal. Don’t just inspect your entire house when you’re making sure that you haven’t left anything behind. Take a look outside too.

Laundry

Have you ever forgotten about a load of laundry that you had in the dryer? Normally, it isn’t a big deal to forget about your laundry for a day or two, but it can be a huge problem when you’re moving to a new place. That’s why you’ll want to make sure you check both your washer and dryer before you leave your home for good.

Even if you’ve never forgotten about a load of laundry before, it’s easy to overlook things when you’re in the midst of a move. Moving to new apartment can add a lot of stress to your life, which means you might forget about something that you normally would have remembered.

Prescriptions

It’s common for people to forget to pack items when they’re moving, but several others things can be forgotten as well. As an example, you may forget to have prescriptions transferred to a new pharmacy. This can be a big problem, especially if you take daily medication.

Talk to your doctor about your prescriptions ahead of time. If you’re going to be seeing a new doctor after you move, you may want to have your current doctor write a refill for your medications now. That way, you won’t have to deal with a lapse a month or two down the road.

Utilities

Another thing that many people overlook when they’re moving is their utility bills. You’ll want to turn off the utilities at your old home before your move, and you’ll want to make sure you set up utilities at your new place.

Memberships

If you have a membership at a local gym, and you won’t be able to use that membership after your move, you’ll want to make sure that you take the time to cancel that membership. Take a look at your finances and see if there’s anything that needs to be canceled.

It’s easy to forget about memberships, especially if your payments are automated. Ensure you figure out what you’re paying for and cancel any memberships that you no longer use. This could wind up saving you quite a bit of money.
