A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Closet

A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Closet

Is it time to invest in some brand-new fashion favourites? If so, it is important that you take the time to give your closet a proper clean out first. You will need to free up some space for your new pieces, after all! Here is how to go about it.

Take your time

This is definitely not a process that you want to rush through. Set aside at least a full day to work through your clothing, accessories, and shoes. You will be surprised at just how relaxing the experience can be! Make it all the more enjoyable by inviting a couple of friends round for a second opinion (and a glass of wine or two!).

Separate into five categories

The main goal of the exercise should be to separate your clothing into five different categories. You will need a pile dedicated to:

  • The pieces that you intend to keep
  • The pieces that you need to mend or clean
  • The pieces that you want to donate
  • The items you want to sell
  • The items that you are going to discard.

Remember to do your best to avoid throwing any items away if at all possible. Try to find a way in which to repurpose or upcycle them, even if it means using them as a cleaning rag for around the house! Sustainability is key.

Give the closet a thorough clean

Dust can accumulate pretty quickly inside your closet, so take this opportunity to wipe it down and to inspect for any insects that could pose a risk to the integrity of your clothing.

Take action

It is now time to take action regarding the five separate piles of clothing that you have created. Head to the tailor or the dry cleaner, donate to your local charity shop and start listing the items that you want to sell on various online second-hand stores. The latter is a great way in which to generate the extra cash that you will need to treat yourself to some new clothes ahead of summertime. Watch in awe at how quickly your unworn items are likely to sell and just how much you will manage to get for them.

Rearrange according to season or colour

You will then need to decide how best to rearrange your clothes collection. Most people will opt to do so according to the season, placing seasonal favourites in the front, easy-to-reach portions of the closet, and the out of season pieces at the back. However, another option is to rearrange according to colour. This can make it effortless to find specific pieces that you are looking for at any given time.

Embark upon your shopping spree

If you have made room in your closet for new pieces of clothing, then it is important to first evaluate the latest trends before hitting the stores. You will discover that kasbah clothing and heavily patterned V-necks are particularly popular right now. Once your closet is perfectly organised, you will have a good general idea of the nature of the items that you need to stock up on.

Conclusion

After a big sort out, you will find it much easier to find the clothes that you actually want to wear, and in turn, make enough room in there for more clothes that you love.
